BK/NY – Friday, February 13th – “If A Tree Falls” Benefit Screening for Kevin Olliff and Tyler Lang

ifatreefallsWHAT: Benefit for AETA defendants Kevin Olliff and Tyler Lang
WHEN: 8pm sharp, Friday, February 13th, 2015
WHERE: The Base1302 Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11221 (directions below)

NOTE: The Base is on the ground floor, is wheelchair accessible, and has a gender neutral toilet.
COST: Entrance is free but we will be requesting donations for Kevin and Tyler’s legal defense fund.

Tyler Lang and Kevin Olliff are two animal rights activists who, in 2014, were arrested in Illinois for “possession of burglary tools.” After a traffic stop, cops allegedly found bolt cutters, muriatic acid, ski masks, and camouflage clothing in the car. Tyler pleaded to 3 months time served while Kevin received a 30 month sentence in state prison. In July 2014, both were indicted under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA) and are accused of liberating animals from fur farms in 3 different states. They face up to 10 years in prison.

We will be screening If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, a film that focuses on our friend and New Yorker, Daniel McGowan. He was arrested in 2005 by federal agents in a nationwide sweep of radical environmentalists involved with the Earth Liberation Front– a group the FBI has called America’s “number one domestic terrorism threat.” The ELF operates in separate anonymous cells without any central leadership and launched spectacular actions against dozens of environmentally destructive businesses: timber companies, SUV dealerships, wild horse slaughterhouses, and a $12 million ski lodge in Vail, Colorado.

After the film, there will be time for questions and answers with special guests, including Rachel Meeropol (Center for Constitutional Rights attorney on Kevin and Tyler’s legal team) and Jenny Synan. NYC ABC will have a table with information and merchandise on political prisoners.

NYC – Tuesday, October 28th – Come to a Green Scare(y) Halloween Card-Writing

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, October 28th, 2014
WHERE: CAGE – 83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: Free

Free Them All!Well, here we are, saddened. Another space in NYC is closing. We’ve been fortunate to call CAGE home to our every-other-week Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinners for over two years. So we thank them for providing us space to support political prisoners and hope they find a new home soon.

In light of the coming holiday, we are sending Halloween cards to targets of the Green Scare.

Since the early 1980s, public relations hacks have been working to reify the term “eco-terrorism.” By 2004, they became successful and a phrase that a decade earlier had no real meaning was now defined by the United States government and used to introduce legislation. Now we have comrades serving decades for economic sabotage and allegations of thought crime. With several recent animal liberation actions, and Tyler Lang & Kevin Olliff being tried as terrorists, it is clear that Earth and animal liberationists are both still active and still in the cross-hairs of the feds. Join us in letting them know they are not forgotten.

BK/NY – October 25th – US Out of my Living Room: The Case of Leslie James Pickering, the Earth Liberation Front Press Office & Burning Books

us out of my living roomWHAT: A talk with Leslie James Pickering
WHEN: 8:00pm, Saturday, October 25th, 2014
WHERE: The Base1302 Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11221 (directions below)
COST: Free, but donations are appreciated.

A decade after being under heavy federal surveillance for exercising free speech in support of the underground Earth Liberation Front, Leslie James Pickering discovered that his associates were being questioned by the FBI, the US Post Office is copying his incoming mail and he was put on a secret list for maximum security screening at airports. Not only that but a federal grand jury subpoena was issued for records on him, his family and his bookstore, Burning Books.

Leslie has launched an extensive legal and public campaign to resist this surveillance, which he believes is aimed to repress Burning Books and the surge of activism and awareness that the bookstore generates, as well as harass and intimidate the radical environmental movement. This multimedia presentation will open eyes to methods used by the federal government to repress activists and freedom struggles, and how they can be resisted.

Burning Books & NYC Anarchist Black Cross will have merchandise and information tables on hand as well.

Eric_Marie_2014With wild asses getting wild against the state in Brazil and Spain, it looks like we will be heading into a very hot summer. It’s only through working together to pull this motherfucker down that we’re getting anywhere, and it’s time again to support the folks who have tried to do just that. The simple way NYC ABC does that is through every-other-week letter-writing dinners.

This week, in honor of the call for a June 11th International Day of Solidarity with Marie Mason and Eric McDavid, we will be sending letters to them. And the next night, join us as we co-host a multimedia extravaganza with members of Marie Mason’s local support crew. If you don’t already know about either Eric or Marie, they are the two folks targeted under the Green Scare who face the longest sentences, around twenty years each.

If, for some crazy reason, you can’t join us, please write to Eric and Marie (or send her a book) from home:

Greeting from Marie Mason

Marie_CardWe recently received a great handmade card from Earth Liberation Front prisoner Marie Mason. Toward the end of her note, she thanks us for our patience in maintaining correspondence. The thanks is likely due to the persistent problem Marie has with receiving and sending mail. Though ostensibly held in a Federal Medical Center (FMC), Marie is actually in a restrictive unit within the FMC that greatly limits her communication with the outside world.

You can support Marie by joining the campaign to move her from FMC Carswell to a prison where she can be in general population. Check movemarie.com for details.

Dear folks at NYC ABC,
Hope this simple ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ gets to you ok (maybe post cards are better, maybe not). Thanks you so much for your support and well wishes. I was glad to get the newsletter last week, to be inspired and informed by Mumia is always a gift. Your project means so much to me and so many others— and I especially want to thank you for your patience in keeping in touch.

Stay strong, be well, until all are free!

United States Government Submits Sentencing Brief for Rebecca Rubin (Operation Backfire)

Today, the United States government submitted its sentencing brief in regards to “Operation Backfire” defendant Rebecca Rubin. Given that Rubin entered a non-cooperating plea agreement, the state is asking for a sentence of 90 months, seven and a half years. For actions taken on behalf of the Earth and its human and non-human inhabitants, we in NYC ABC find this disgusting. Rebecca should be free, back with her family and loved ones!

Rebecca Rubin plead guilty to taking part in Earth Liberation Front actions, including actions taken against Bio-Devices in California; U.S. Forest Products in Oregon; and the Vail Ski Resort in Colorado. She also participated in the liberation of horses and the arson of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse Facilities in Litchfield, California and Burns, Oregon.

Rubin is scheduled to appear in court for sentencing on Monday, January 27th. If you are in or near Portland, Oregon, please consider showing your support.

The complete sentencing brief can be viewed here.

NYC – Tuesday, October 29th – Come to a Green Scare(y) Halloween Card-Writing + Letter-Writing For Move Marie

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, October 29th, 2013
WHERE: CAGE83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: Free

Free Them All!With grand jury resistance here in NYC, Feds sneaking around in Southern California, and other campaigns & projects across the country, anarchists have their hands full. The work that’s happening on these projects is, in many ways, inspiring. With that inspiration, there are plenty of reasons to become directly involved. It is in the spirit of direct involvement (and the magick of Halloween) that we host another Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner. And what could be more ghoulish than the Green Scare?

Since the early 1980s, public relations hacks have been working to reify the term “eco-terrorism.” By 2004, they became successful and a phrase that a decade earlier had no real meaning was now defined by the United States government and used to introduce legislation. Now we have comrades serving decades for economic sabotage and allegations of thought crime. With several recent animal liberation actions, and Rebecca Rubin facing 5 to seven and a half years, it is clear that Earth and animal liberationists are both still active and still in the cross-hairs of the feds. Join us in letting them know they are not forgotten.

We are also taking this letter-writing night to answer the call to organize an event to get letters on behalf of Marie Mason, in an effort to get her moved from the isolation unit in FMC Carswell, where she is currently imprisoned. For more information on the campaign, visit movemarie.com
