National Call-In Day to Move Marie Mason

movemariephonein

Environmental activist and community organizer Marie Mason is serving the longest sentence ever (22 years) for environmentally motivated property destruction. In 2010 she was transferred to the notorious high security prison FMC Carswell.

Now we’re mobilizing to get her moved.

On Monday, October 21st, people across the country and world will keep the Bureau of Prisons office ringing off the hook demanding she be moved. We need your help to make the 21st the day we forced the BOP to take notice.

There are multiple ways to join in on the action: Read more…

NYC – Tuesday, June 11th – Letter-writing to Marie Mason and Eric McDavid

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, June 11th, 2013
WHERE: CAGE83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: Free20130605-141948.jpgBetween wild asses getting wild against the state in Sweden, Turkey and Greece, it looks like we will be heading into a very hot summer. It’s only through working together to pull this motherfucker down that we’re getting anywhere, and it’s time again to support the folks who have tried to do just that. The simple way NYC ABC does that is through every-other-week letter-writing dinners.

This week, in honor of the call for a June 11th International Day of Solidarity with Marie Mason and Eric McDavid, we will be sending letters to them. If you don’t already know about either Eric or Marie, they are the two folks targeted under the Green Scare who face the longest sentences, around twenty years each.

If, for some crazy reason, you can’t join us, please write to Marie and Eric from home:

NYC – 8 Jan – Card-signing for international prisoners

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, January 8th, 2013
WHERECAGE - 83A Hester Street New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: Free
First: Happy New Year! If you didn’t get a chance to come to the New Year’s Eve noise demonstration we organized, please take the time to read this reportback. To hear nearly 100 people calling out the names of comrades locked behind the walls of the Metropolitan Correctional Center was motiviating. So much so, in fact, that folks had to take that energy into the streets. And much of that energy still lingers, pushing us to continue the work of supporting our comrades who are still in prison. By now, you probably know that one way we do that is through every-other-week political prisoner letter-writing dinners. We’ve lost count, but this week’s dinner will be about the 140th we’ve hosted. This week we are focusing on the international anarchist, earth, and animal liberation prisoners.

Here in the states, folks are being persecuted for possibly even associating with anarchists or animal liberationists. Around the globe, the state and capital collude in much the same way, and as a result rebels are imprisoned for acting on their desire for a free world. Please join us in sending cards to these imprisoned comrades. We’ll see you at supper!

BK/NY – Tuesday, October 25th – Come to a Green Scare(y) Halloween Card-Writing

What: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
When: 7pm (sharp), Tuesday, October 25th, 2011
Where: 885 Park Avenue, Brooklyn, New York (see below for directions)
Cost: Free

Free Them All!

As problematic as the language of “occupation” is in a nation that continues to occupy stolen land, a movement is spreading. From Rome to Oakland, comrades are making it clear that unless there is conflict with the state and capital, the so-called occupations are merely camp-outs. And on the ground, it is clear that folks are willing to physically defend the spaces they have built together. There is a lot to be inspired by and plenty of reason to become directly involved. It is in the spirit of direct involvement (and the magick of Halloween) that we host another Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner. And what could be more ghoulish than the Green Scare?

Since the early 1980s, public relations hacks have been working to reify the term “eco-terrorism.” By 2004, they became successful and a phrase that a decade earlier had no real meaning was now defined by the United States government and used to introduce legislation. Now we have comrades serving decades for economic sabotage and allegations of thought crime. With two folks recently arrested and Walter Bond sentenced to another seven years, it is clear that Earth and animal liberationists are both still active and still in the cross-hairs of the feds. Join us in letting them know they are not forgotten.

The deal, as always, is that you come bringing only yourself (and your friends and comrades), and we provide you with a delicious vegan meal, information about the prisoners as well as all of the letter-writing materials and prisoner-letter-writing info you could ever want to use in one evening. In return, you write a thoughtful letter to a political prisoner or prisoner of war of your choosing or, better yet, keep up a long-term correspondence. We’ll also provide some brief updates and pass around birthday cards for the PP/POWs whose birthdays fall in the next two weeks thanks to the Anarchist Birthday Brigade.

DIRECTIONS:
Getting to 885 Park Avenue is simple:
From the J/M/Z:
Flushing Stop: Walk southeast on Broadway (toward Sumner Place, away from Thornton Street) and make a right on Park Avenue. We’re halfway down the block, on your right.
Myrtle Stop: Walk northwest on Broadway (toward Melrose Street, away from Troutman Street) and make a left on Park Avenue. We’re halfway down the block on the right.

From the G Train:
Flushing Avenue Stop: Walk south on Marcy Avenue (toward Hopkins Street, away from Wallabout Street) and turn left on Park Avenue. We’re three and a half blocks down on the left.
Myrtle-Willoughby Avenues Stop: Walk north on Marcy Avenue (toward Stockton Street, away from Vernon Avenue) and turn right on Park Avenue. We’re three and a half blocks down on your left.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch. Otherwise, we’ll see you at supper.

This event is brought to you by your friendly neighborhood Anarchist Black Cross.–

NYC – Sunday, September 18th – 2011 Benefit Book Sale for Daniel McGowan

WHAT: 6th Annual Benefit Book Sale for Daniel McGowan
WHEN: 11am to 7pm, Sunday, September 18th, 2011 [rain date: TBA]
WHERE: Bedford Avenue at North 6th Street in Brooklyn
COST: There will be books priced for any budget

It’s that time of year again. With so many folks going back to school, books are on our minds. And what better way to get some great books than to also financially aid a political prisoner? We’ve had great success and good times with these book sales in the past and this year will be no different.

Why a fundraiser now? While you may not realize it, life in prison can actually be really expensive. From making overpriced phone calls and e-mail access, to having to buy basic necessities from the commissary at prices many times that of retail, Daniel’s living costs have add up. For that reason, even if you can’t make it to the book sale, please consider donating to Daniel today. Without donations from friends and supporters, Daniel would be unable to buy the minimal goods that provide a small amount of comfort while he is imprisoned. Not to mention the staggering amount of money he still owes for the legal representation during his trial.

On Sunday, September 18th, Book Thug Nation and Family & Friends of Daniel McGowan will be having an all-day book sale to raise money for Daniel’s legal defense and commissary fund. The sale will be held at the Book Thug Nation book tables on Bedford Avenue and North 6th Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn.  Along with great books at inexpensive prices, there will be music, a table with Daniel t-shirts, merchandise and literature and maybe even some free food!

To make the sale happen we NEED your book donations– preferably ahead of time.  Please see the list of guidelines below for what to donate. The best way to donate is to bring your books to the Book Thug Nation storefront at 100 North 3rd Street (between Berry and Wythe Streets) from 12-9pm any day before the sale. Please be sure to tell whoever is working that the books are specifically for the Daniel McGowan Benefit Sale. You can also bring books to North 6th Street and Bedford Avenue the morning of September18th or contact krazdale@gmail.com to make specific arrangements for donating.

DONATION GUIDELINES

-Contemporary and Classic Literary Fiction (e.g. Murakami, Nabokov, Plath, Safran Foer, Hemingway, Didion, Poe, Bolano, et cetera)
-Non Fiction on topics such as:

Latino/a
Art
Eastern Religion

-Cook Books

Books that aren’t sold on the day of the sale will be held for future benefits or donated to NYC Books Through Bars.

Brought to you by Book Thug Nation

Thanks for your continued support of Daniel!

BK/NY – December 7th – Dinner and a Movie for Daniel McGowan

On December 7, 2005, New York City activist Daniel McGowan was among the first people arrested in an FBI offensive against environmental activists called “Operation Backfire.” Operation Backfire is part of the federal government’s broader campaign of repression of environmentalists and animal liberationists called the Green Scare (an allusion to the Red Scares of the early and mid twentieth century).

To mark the five-year anniversary of the Operation Backfire arrests, and to highlight the continued repression of activists that the federal government has labeled “terrorists,” Family & Friends of Daniel McGowan will be hosting dinner and a movie this December. Proceeds will go to Daniel’s commissary account.

WHO: Presented by Family & Friends of Daniel McGowan.
WHAT: A delicious home-cooked vegan dinner and screening of the highly entertaining film “Forest Warrior,” starring none other than Chuck Norris.
WHEN: 7-10pm, Tuesday, December 7th, 2010
WHERE: Semi-Legit – 6 Charles Place, Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York.
Off the Myrtle Broadway J/M/Z Trains or the Jefferson L Train. Here’s a map.
COST: $5-$20, suggested donation

Plot Summary for Forest Warrior (1996): Majestic Tanglewood Mountain is a special place. So, when deforestation looms, the young Lords of Tanglewood (who’ve established a makeshift clubhouse on its slope) and the spirit of mountain man John McKenna (Chuck Norris) summon all their powers — some supernatural — to save the pristine wilderness.
View the Trailer.

Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice activist from New York City, now a political prisoner held in USP Marion. He’s serving a seven-year sentence in federal prison for his role in two arsons claimed by the Earth Liberation Front in Oregon, 2001. Daniel was raised in Rockaway Beach, Queens and has boasted of having lived in almost every borough of NYC. He has been active in everything from rainforest preservation to indigenous rights to political-prisoner support to military counter-recruitment. At the time of his arrest, December 7th, 2005, Daniel was also working at WomensLaw.org, an organization that assists survivors of domestic violence, and pursuing a master’s degree in acupuncture. In August 2008, Daniel was moved to the Communication Management Unit (CMU) in Marion, Illinois, a federal prison unit that bypassed the usual review process and severely restricts inmates’ communication with the outside world. After organizing against CMUs with help from the Center for Constitutional Rights, he was transferred to USP Marion general population in October 2010. He is due to be released from prison on June 5th, 2013.
