jaan and tom 2015The summer is officially here and what better way to kick it off than with some solidarity to US held political prisoners and POWs. This Tuesday’s NYC ABC dinner will focus on two Anti-Imperialist Political Prisoners– Jaan Laaman and Tom Manning. Both are imprisoned for actions carried out by United Freedom Front (UFF), a clandestine revolutionary organization active in the United States in the early 1980s. The group targeted government institutions and major corporations that had ties to the South African Apartheid system or right-wing paramilitaries in Central America. This included taking actions directly against the South African and United States governments. The UFF carried out targeted bombings of corporate buildings, courthouses and military facilities as well as bank robberies to fund revolutionary projects. Both men were deeply involved in anti-South African apartheid organizing.

Jaan has been in solitary confinement for over three months as punishment for releasing two statements in early March; one having to do with the Women’s Strike & the other having to do with our recently deceased comrade Lynne Stewart. We recognize that the State will only enforce the laws that suit them and in turn will also disregard them when it suits them, so this blatant denial of Jaan’s free speech comes at no surprise.  It is our hope that the flood of letters we send to Jaan at this time will not only lift his spirits in this time of repression but also show those who keep him locked behind the walls how little we think of their efforts to silence him.

We expect to see you on Tuesday. If you can’t make it, please take the time to write letters to Jaan and Tom:

jaan and tom 2015Can you name one thing that’s more important than a celebrity publicly criticizing another celebrity? It’s as if cops weren’t indiscriminately murdering folks and landlords weren’t looking to kick folks out into the street to make a buck. Meanwhile the state fabricates legislation to repress dissent. But by all means, corporate media, distract us with what some musician rants about. The crew in NYC ABC sees through the bullshit and refuses to lose focus on supporting imprisoned revolutionaries.

Support Tom Manning’s Parole Bid

tom maningPolitical Prisoner from the United Freedom Front, Tom Manning comes up for parole in November and has asked people to submit letters supporting his release on parole. According to Tom, “if folks can just write their own letters expressing each ones ideas rather than all of them sounding like they read a form letter – so that they put their own voice down on paper,” that would be best.

NYC ABC supports Tom’s bid for freedom using whatever means he chooses and are hoping you can take a minute to write a letter on his behalf. Please be polite––expressing your disdain for Tom’s incarceration or your political beliefs is not appropriate for these letters. Tom has been down since 1985 and we need him home.

Your letter should reference Thomas Manning #10373-016 and be sent to:

United States Parole Commission
90 K Street NE, Third Floor
Washington, District of Columbia 20530

Please make a copy and send it to:

Biography
Thomas Manning is a revolutionary who was active in the United Freedom Front, a clandestine anti-imperialist organization that carried out targeted bombings of corporate buildings, courthouses and military facilities and also carried out bank robberies to fund revolutionary projects.   He was unjustly sentenced to 80 years in prison for killing a New Jersey state trooper in self-defense.

Life in Prison
Tom, like many political prisoners, has been designated a “high max” prisoner, which lead him to be on continual lockdown for the first 12 years in prison. Tom has also been subject to physical abuse and denied medical attention while in prison. In 2006, his artwork was taken down from a show entitled “Can’t Jail the Spirit” at the University of Southern Maine following pressure right-wing activists.

NYC – Tuesday, July 23rd – Letter-Writing to United Freedom Front Prisoners

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner

WHERE: CAGE83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)

tom and jaan_mandelaWhen Barack Obama recently went to visit the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years as a political prisoner, the irony wasn’t lost on NYC ABC. And while we planned to focus our next political prisoner letter-writing dinner on two U.S. held prisoners who, like Mandela, fought to upend the apartheid regime in South Africa, other folks were offering a similar analysis. So this week, as we gear up to send letters to United Freedom Front prisoners Jaan Laaman and Tom Manning, we share the following from World’s Deadliest Herbivore. If you aren’t following that tumblr, you should be.

“While Barack Obama uses a visit to Nelson Mandela to avoid criticism for his human rights abuses at home and abroad, he is also ignoring two other men who fought against Apartheid in South Africa. Jaan Laaman and Tom Manning, members of the United Freedom Front, participated in actions less militant than Mandela but remain incarcerated here in the United States.

Despite the efforts of conservative and liberal politicians alike, Nelson Mandela was freed from prison in 1990. Others, like Laaman and Manning, were left to rot for being brave enough to fight against the evils of apartheid. While Obama claims to respect the legacy of Mandela (while supporting apartheid in Israel) he is allowing others who were cut from the same cloth to spend their lives behind bars.

While we can not expect Barack Obama to lift a finger to help anyone but the wealthy friends of the DNC, we can personally do something to make Jaan’s 53 year and Tom’s 80 year prison sentences easier to endure. Start by writing Jaan and Tom some letters!”

Jaan Laaman and Tom Manning are anti-imperialist revolutionaries who were active in the United Freedom Front, a clandestine anti-imperialist organization. The UFF carried out targeted bombings of corporate buildings, courthouses and military facilities as well as bank robberies to fund revolutionary projects. Both men were deeply involved in anti South African apartheid organizing.
