Presumably you’ve been able to sidestep the hoverboards and consumer-ready drones that are meant to keep you distracted while racist goons in blue uniforms murder every person of color they can. Whatever the fad, disguised as this year’s must-have shiny object, NYC ABC stays focused on what we know– supporting U.S. held political prisoners and prisoners of war. To that end, we are hosting our every-other-week political prisoner letter-writing dinner. And how better to end the year than by focusing on Mumia Abu-Jamal?

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an African-American writer and journalist, author of six books and hundreds of columns and articles, who has spent the last 30 years on Pennsylvania’s death row and now general population. Mumia was wrongfully convicted and sentenced for the murder of a Philadelphia cop. The demand for a new trial and freedom is supported by heads of state, Nobel laureates, distinguished human rights organizations, scholars, religious leaders, artists, scientists and, as important, millions of folks like you and us. For more information, be sure to visit bringmumiahome.com.

We expect to see you on Tuesday. If you can’t make it, please take the time to write a letter to Mumia:

women 2015So cops in Chicago now function like the thugs of the CIA by having a black site where they torture and disappear folks they arrest. Let that set in for a minute. Chicago cops, with a storied history of corruption and brutality, operate an off-the-books compound where they interrogate folks. Ask many of the prisoners we support and they’ll describe similar torture during their detentions and/or imprisonments. Speaking of supporting political prisoners, it’s time again for the every-other-week NYC ABC political prisoner letter-writing dinner. In this month of women’s history, we offer our solidarity to female rebels.

Come find out more about Debbie, Janet, and Janine Africa, Maya Chase, Chelsea Manning, Rev. Joy Powell, Megan Rice, and Rebecca Rubin. We’ll also have other political prisoner news, so come enjoy a meal with friends (new or old).

We expect to see you on Tuesday. If you can’t make it, please take the time to write letters to the prisoners:

johanna fernandez_mumia abu jamalTo our comrades in the streets of NYC and around the world— as there is no singular moment, but rather a series of moments that bring about revolution, this is one of them and you are pushing it forward. Please stay safe and look out for each other, without tempering your desires. NYC ABC is hosting our every-other-week Political Prisoner Letter Writing Dinner to show solidarity with other revolutionaries– those captured and imprisoned by the state.

This week we are writing to Mumia Abu-Jamal. We’ll also be passing around postcards to sign for Jeremy Hammond.

For more information, be sure to visit freemumia.com.

We are lucky to be joined by guest speaker Johanna Fernandez, Assistant Professor of History at Baruch College, editor of the forthcoming Writing on the Wall, Selected Prison Writings of Mumia Abu Jamal  (City Lights) as well as When the World Was Their Stage: A History of the Young Lords Party, 1968-1974 (Princeton University Press). Johanna works with the Bring Mumia Home  campaign and will be discussing the history of Mumia Abu Jamal’s case and the campaign to bring him home.

We expect to see you on Tuesday. If you can’t make it, please take the time to write a letter to Mumia:

NYC – Tuesday, September 16th – Letter-writing to MOVE 9

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, September 16th, 2014
WHERE: CAGE83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: FreeIt’s been a busy couple of weeks since our last political prisoner letter-writing dinner. We hosted Running Down the Walls 2014 and folks from our collective are preparing to attend a North American Anarchist Black Cross conference in Colorado. Meanwhile, Raytheon the United States government continues to try and convince the world that plans to start new wars in Northern Iraq and Syria are justified and desirable. In that same period of time, one of our imprisoned MOVE 9 comrades was again denied parole. So it is on the MOVE 9 prisoners NYC ABC focuses our next dinner. We are also very fortunate to have a member of the campaign to Free the MOVE 9 coming to give background on the case and updates on the prisoners.

The MOVE 9 are innocent men and women who have been in prison since August 8, 1978, following a massive police attack on MOVE at their home in the Powelton Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. This was seven years before the government dropped a bomb on MOVE, killing 11 people, including 5 babies. For more information on the MOVE 9, visit http://onamove.com/move-9 and for more information on the campaign to secure parole for them, check out http://move9parole.blogspot.com

If for some bizarre reason you can’t make it to dinner, please write to the remaining MOVE 9 prisoners from home. Their addresses are:

NYC – Tuesday, November 12th – Letter-writing to Mumia Abu-Jamal

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, November 12th, 2013
WHERE: CAGE83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: Free

Mumia Abu-JamalNEWS FLASH! Everyone, stay calm, we have great news. New York City has a new mayor. Yep, all your problems are solved. The state? Capital? Both things of the past. Why? Because some goof positioning himself as “progressive” is steering the ship for a while.

Unfortunately, sarcasm doesn’t necessarily read well on the internet. If it isn’t clear enough, we in NYC ABC harbor no illusions that the new guy is, to paraphrase The Who, not just like the old guy. So until we hear otherwise, we’ll just keep doing what needs to get done– supporting imprisoned comrades. The most common way we do that is with every-other-week political prisoner letter-writing dinners.

This week we are writing to Mumia Abu-Jamal. We’ll also be passing around postcards to sign for grand jury resister Jerry Koch.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an African-American writer and journalist, author of six books and hundreds of columns and articles, who has spent the last 30 years on Pennsylvania’s death row and now general population. Mumia was wrongfully convicted and sentenced for the murder of a Philadelphia cop named Daniel Faulkner. The demand for a new trial and freedom is supported by heads of state, nobel laureates, distinguished human rights organizations, scholars, religious leaders, artists, scientists and, as important, millions of folks like you and us.

If for some nutty reason you can’t make it out, but still want to support Mumia, you can write to him at:Mumia Abu-Jamal #AM 8335
