Antifascists fight against those who—in the government or in the streets, dream of imposing their fascist and other Far Right nationalist nightmares on the rest of us. Throughout the world, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and racist bigotries are on the rise. Antifas are on the frontline in confronting these reactionary politics, and we will not forget our comrades imprisoned in the course of this struggle.

The July 25 International Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners originated in 2014 as a Day of Solidarity with Jock Palfreeman, an Australian who is imprisoned in Bulgaria for defending two Romani men from an attack by fascist football hooligans. Groups around the world took action: holding demonstrations, benefits supporting the Bulgarian Prisoners Association, writing to Jock, and talking about the plight of the Romani and Sinti people in general.

In 2015, the day has been expanded and extends solidarity to all antifascist prisoners around the world. We encourage groups to take the day to plan an event of their choice—whether it is a letter writing, demonstration, benefit, or other action—and to focus on the prisoners and related issues that are of most importance to them locally.

In NYC, we’ll show support with the following:
Cinema (Watch Nazis get what’s coming to them!)
Snacks (Delicious & Vegan!)
Speakers (Short & Sweet! Learn about anti-fascist movements from around the world and the comrades in jail for fighting the good fight!)
Solidarity (Sign cards that we will send to all antifa prisoners!)

No Pasaran!
Until All Are Free!

NYC – Tuesday, August 5th – Letter-writing to Imam Jamil al-Amin

WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner
WHEN: 7pm sharp, Tuesday, August 5, 2014
WHERE: CAGE83A Hester Street (UPSTAIRS) New York, New York 10002 (directions below)
COST: Free
from h. rap to imam jamilHere in NYC, it’s been a busy mid-summer for NYC ABC with recent events at The Base, including a night of solidarity with international anti-fascist prisoner Jock Palfreeman,  the launch of the Earth First! Direct Action Manual, and planning our annual ‘Running Down the Walls’ 5K run.

Recently, we were reminded of the quote ‘violence is as American as cherry pie’ with the choking murder of Eric Garner on Staten Island by the NYPD. That prescient quote was from political prisoner Imam Jamil Al-Amin (then known as H. Rap Brown) which  brings us to this next letter writing dinner.

Jamil Al-Amin is a long time community leader and organizer, falsely imprisoned for  killing a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia. He was convicted in 2002 and after some time in Georgia state prison, the state decided to bury him in federal custody at the notorious Florence Supermax in Colorado. Due to a concerted and strong effort on the part of his supporters, Imam Jamil was transferred to the medical facility at Butner after having been diagnosed with bone cancer.

We are lucky to be joined by guest speaker Johanna Fernandez, Assistant Professor of History at Baruch College, editor of the forthcoming Writing on the Wall, Selected Prison Writings of Mumia Abu Jamal  (City Lights) as well as When the World Was Their Stage: A History of the Young Lords Party, 1968-1974 (Princeton University Press). Johanna works with the Bring Mumia Home  campaign and will be discussing the history of Imam Jamil al-Amin’s case and the campaign to get him proper cancer treatment & bring him home.

If, for whatever reason, you can’t make it to the event, please take time to write a letter:

BK/NY – Friday, July 25th – Day of Solidarity With Antifascist Prisoner Jock Palfreeman

WHAT: International Day of Solidarity
WHEN: 7:00pm, Friday, July 25th
WHERE: The Base1302 Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn, New York 11221 (directions below)
COST: Free, but donations are appreciated.

jock palfreeman eventJock Palfreeman is an antifascist prisoner in Bulgaria. Originally from Australia, he came to the aid of two Roma men being attacked by a mob of neo-Nazi football hooligans, and in the intervening fight one of the attackers was killed. After a biased trial, Jock received a 20-year sentence, which he is serving in a notoriously rundown prison in Sophia, Bulgaria. The Bulgarian government has refused to allow his transfer to Australia to serve his sentence, despite international agreements, unless his family pays a massive ransom.

In response to a call for an international day of solidarity with Jock, we’ll talk a little about the situation of the Roma, show a documentary about Jock’s case, eat popcorn, and write letters asking that Jock be transferred to Australia. At his request, we’ll be taking donations for the Bulgarian Prisoners Association, which he is chair of; they will be used for a legal aid defense fund and for lawyers to protect prisoners against punishments of the prison.
