Tuesday, May 19th – Letter Writing for Jeremy Hammond & Eric King

As COVID 19 continues to rear its ugly head and capitalism continues to exploit vulnerable communities made even more vulnerable in the wake of the pandemic, we have no choice but to continue our work as well. Although we remain quarantined from our in-person communities, our friends behind the walls are experiencing a level of isolation and danger to which our chosen social isolation cannot compare. Therefore, instead of coming together at The Base in Brooklyn, we at Page One Collective are (virtually) joining our friends at NYC ABC to maintain some semblance of a bi-weekly letter-writing tradition. We ask that folks participate as well, so we can do our best to keep prisoners from being more alienated than they already are, by writing from home. Please post a photo of your addressed envelope on social media and tag us (with your return address blurred out) and we will share it, building digital community while our analog community stays indoors and washes its hands.
This week we are focusing on two anarchist folks who have both had particularly rough years, even by the standard of the hell that is prison. Please join us in sending them some much needed love and support as they navigate their respective situations amidst the pandemic.
Jeremy Hammond is an anarchist computer hacker from Chicago. In November 2013, he was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for leaking the personal information of 860,000 customers of private intelligence firm Strategic Forecasting (Stratfor) through the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks. This information revealed that Stratfor spies on activists, among others, at the behest of corporations and the U.S. government. In early September 2019, Jeremy was transferred to Virginia and called against his will to appear before a grand jury. He was jailed at the same spot as Chelsea Manning, who was also being held for grand jury resistance, until March 12, 2020. Because of COVID, he is now stuck at Grady County Jail awaiting transfer back to a federal facility to resume his original sentence. For more information visit freejeremy.net.
In May 2019 Eric King was indicted by a grand jury in the District Court of Colorado for a new federal felony charge of Assaulting a Federal Official. This charge is based on what the government says happened during the interview in the Florence storage room with a Lieutenant. Eric now faces up to 20 additional years in federal prison and is fighting this charge while still in the custody of his accusers. Eric is pre-trial, do not mention his current charges.
Eric is a vegan anarchist prisoner serving a 10 year sentence for an attempted firebombing of a government official’s office in Kansas City, Missouri in September 2014. Eric was charged with throwing a hammer through a window of the building, followed by two lit Molotov cocktails. The criminal complaint states that both incendiary devices failed to ignite. We encourage folks to send him a card or letter and spread the word about him if not already doing so. More information can be found at supportericking.org.

NYC/NYE – Noise Demo Against the Prison Industrial Complex, In Solidarity with PPs and POWs

WHERE: Metropolitan Correction Center (MCC, the federal prison in downtown Manhattan); Pearl Street, between Cardinal Hayes Place and Park Row (J to Chambers Street or 4/5/6/ to City Hall)
BRING: Noisemakers, air horns, drums, anything that is loud!
On the noisiest night of the year in New York City, come help us remind folks locked up that they are not alone. NYC Anarchist Black Cross, in response to an international call for noise demonstrations outside of prisons, is asking folks to join us outside of the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in lower Manhattan. Come, not to appeal to authority, speak truth to power, or any other contrivance, but rather to stand arm in arm with comrades and show direct solidarity to those on the other side of the wall.
The state, writ large, is targeting anarchists all across the United States and abroad. This will be both protest and celebration. To keep the cold at bay, comrades from MACC will be on hand with cookies and hot cocoa to keep the vocal cords nice and warm.

Perpetual chaos keeps everyone so off balance that news of the navy confirming the existence of UFOs, youth around the world demanding those in power address a global environmental crisis, and workers from Appalachia to Detroit blockading to force greedy bosses to come off a little of their profits all slide by in a cycle or two. Impeachment? That’s last week’s news. Protests against authoritarianism in Hong Kong? Was that even this year? It’s enough to make one throw up their hands and ask whether or not anything can be done. NYC ABC is here to tell you that there is plenty to get done and that it doesn’t have to overwhelm you. Focus on something that might seem small, like writing a letter to a political prisoner or prisoner of war, make a connection to someone who has been pulled from a community of resistance, and build from there. We help to make those connections with our every-other-week political prisoner letter-writing dinners and this week we focus on Jeremy Hammond, currently jailed for resisting a grand jury, while also serving a federal prison sentence for “hacktivism.”

The weather is getting better and we are drawing ever so nearer to this year’s Running Down the Walls on June 3rd in Prospect Park. In solidarity with our friends, families, and comrades on the inside we look to each other to support the efforts of the radical recipients of this year’s raised funds: the ABCF Warchest and the Revolutionary Liberation Bail Fund (you can donate at PayPal.me/nycabc). We also look to the broader community to take this opportunity to introduce them to anarchist ideals and principles through the support of those who have taken ultimate risks and/or suffered consequences unfathomable to most in order to make their communities and the world at large a better place. We also should probably take the opportunity to show out of towners that not everyone running on the beautiful NYC streets is a disgusting bigoted attorney as this week’s news would understandably, hilariously, lead people to believe.
But just because we are preparing to throw this amazing run/picnic/fundraiser, don’t for one second think we aren’t going to still be hosting our every other week letter writing dinner. This week we are writing to Jeremy Hammond.
