WHAT: Political Prisoner Letter-Writing Dinner

barrett_jeremy_chelseaWho doesn’t love really good sports talk, right? Of course you saw the way sporting team defeated their rivals at the Big Game™. In the latest global distraction, we’re rooting for the protesters, including those imprisoned for challenging the state and capital as they’ve colluded to further disenfranchise the poor. As our solidarity extends to comrades jailed in Brazil, we also return to the way we’ve been supporting U.S. held political prisoners for the past several years. The simple way NYC ABC does that is through every-other-week letter-writing dinners.

This week, we are writing to three imprisoned comrades— targeted by the state for their work to expose the atrocities committed by, and in service to, the United States government and the economic system that feeds it.

Having previously been raided by the FBI on March 6, 2012 and not arrested or charged, on September 12, 2012 Barrett Brown was again raided and this time arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation while he was online participating in a Tinychat session. He was subsequently denied bail and detained without charge and adequate medical treatment for over two weeks while in the custody of US Marshals. In the first week of October 2012, he was finally indicted on three counts. related to alleged activities or postings on popular websites such as Twitter and YouTube. He was later indicted by a federal grand jury on twelve additional counts related to data from the Stratfor breach, and a third time on two more counts, relating to the March 2012 FBI raid(s) on his apartment and his mother’s house.

Jeremy Hammond, a former member of the hacking network Anonymous who has become a cause célèbre for hacktivists, civil libertarians and those concerned about the rights of whistleblowers, is a gifted young computer programmer who is currently spending a decade in prison. His crime? Leaking information from the private intelligence firm Strategic Forecasting, information which revealed that Stratfor had been spying on human rights activists at the behest of corporations and the U.S. government.

The trial of military whistle-blower and democracy advocate Chelsea Manning (known as Bradley Manning until her Aug 22, 2013 announcement) finished on August 21st, 2013. After a prosecution which starkly showcased US government officials’ misplaced priorities when it comes to human rights, Army whistleblower PVT Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison. This case sets a dangerous precedent for the first amendment, opening whistle-blowers and those who help them to extreme prosecution.

If, for some crazy reason, you can’t join us, please write to Barrett, Jeremy, and Chelsea (or send a book) from home:

NYC – Friday, November 15th – Noise Demo For Jeremy Hammond

WHEN: 6:00pm, Friday, November 15th
WHERE: 150 Park Row – Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), near the northeast corner of Park Row and Pearl Street (directions below)
COST: Free

At 6:00pm on Friday, November 15th, NYC Anarchist Black Cross is organizing a noise demonstration outside the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in solidarity with Jeremy Hammond. Earlier in the day, Jeremy will be sentenced, having pled guilty to one count of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Jeremy Hammond is a long-time anarchist and hacker from Chicago. He is currently being held prisoner at the MCC in Manhattan for taking part in attacks carried out by Antisec/Anonymous against global intelligence company Stratfor. In these attacks, the website was taken down and defaced and millions of internal e-mails were submitted to Wikileaks.

Regardless of the sentence Jeremy receives, let’s let him know he is not alone. He has the support of revolutionary comrades around the world, particularly in the city that pathetic Lulzsec snitch Hector Xavier Monsegur calls home. This will be a noise demo so please bring noisemakers, banners, and whatever else will help communicate our solidarity.

Letters urgently needed for Jeremy Hammond

jeremy hammondJeremy Hammond, who is being held right here in NYC, has an upcoming sentencing date. In preparation for that, his support crew is urging folks to write letters requesting leniency from the judge. NYC ABC, in turn, are asking you to help Jeremy and his supporters. Historically, pre-sentencing letters have proven to persuade judges’ opinions in that they show how much support someone has and how valuable they are to their communities. Jeremy deserves to be free NOW, so whatever you can do to encourage Judge Preska to do the right thing, please do it. And don’t forget to pack the courtroom on Friday, November 15th, the day on which Jeremy will be sentenced.

From freejeremy.net:
“We are currently collecting letters of support to ask Judge Loretta Preska for leniency in sentencing.

You can find the template below, or you can download it in either Microsoft Word or PDF formats.

The deadline for submitting these letters is October 15, 2013.

We in NYC ABC have had a hell of a week, which ended with a noise demonstration outside the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in downtown Manhattan. It’s not typical for us to get the opportunity to organize such a demonstration knowing a political prisoner is within earshot and will likely both see and hear it. So we were glad when 60 or so folks showed up, noisemakers in tow, to support Jeremy Hammond on the night of Friday the 13th. Jeremy has a court date on July 23rd. To keep his spirits high until then, we are sending him letters at our every-other-week political prisoner letter-writing dinner.

Jeremy Hammond is a long-time anarchist and hacker from Chicago. He is currently being held prisoner at the MCC in Manhattan, awaiting trial for allegedly taking part in attacks carried out by Antisec/Anonymous against global intelligence company Stratfor. PLEASE REMEMBER: Jeremy is pre-trial. Take care with what you write and do not talk about the case.
