Special Letter-Writing in The Bronx to Support the Virgin Island Five

What: Political Prisoner Letter Writing Dinner
When: 7pm, Tuesday October 13, 2009
Cost: Free

Attention all letter writers! As a result of the scum landlord of 1-2-3 evicting us (and all the other groups), we are in a new location for this week– the Red Roots Community Space in the Boogie Down Bronx. Go here for directions.

This week we’ll be writing to the Virgin Island 5, a group of activists who in 1973 were all sentenced to life in prison for acts they did not commit. In 1972, a group of men gunned down 8 tourists on a Rockefeller-owned golf course. In the manhunt that ensued, 5 men were arrested, and viciously tortured. Despite the numerous instances of wrongdoing in the “trial” that followed, their convictions held up and three are in prison to this day. One of the 5 was pardoned, and the other was able to hijack a plane on his way to be transferred to another prison, and divert it to Cuba(!).

You can write to them here:

Hanif Shabazz Bey (Beaumont Gereau)
RR 1 Box 9955
Kingshill, St Coix, Virgin Islands, 00850

Abdul Aziz (Warren Ballentine) #1415430
272 Dogwood Drive
Post Office Box 759
Big Stone Gap, Virginia 24219

Malik Smith (Meral Smith)
RR 1 Box 9955
Kingshill, St Croix, Virgin Islands

We start eating promptly at 7 and writing at about 7:30, so don’t be late for supper. We’ll see you at the table.

The deal, as always, is that you come bringing only yourself (and your friends and comrades), and we provide you with a delicious vegan meal, information about a political prisoner or group of prisoners as well as all of the letter-writing materials and prisoner-letter-writing info you could ever want to use in one evening. In return, you write a thoughtful letter to a political prisoner or prisoner of war of your choosing or, better yet, keep up a long-term correspondence.
