marie as wasecaYou’re gearing up for the inauguration, right? Of course you are. Who isn’t excited about the second term of a president who signed into law indefinite detention for U.S. citizens; has expanded the use of drones for murder, including the murders of civilians and low-grade military personnel; and would be tried as a war criminal if the Nuremberg principles were applied? Sarcasm aside, we’re sure you have other things to do besides watch the televised sham that is U.S. democracy. Like get to work at your second job to avoid being evicted from your home. We in NYC ABC have other things to do as well, such as get ready for our every-other-week political prisoner letter-writing dinner. This week, in response to a call for events for Marie Mason‘s upcoming birthday, we are sending letters to her.

Marie Mason is a loving mother of two and a long-time activist in the environmental and labor movements. In March 2008, she was arrested by federal authorities for charges related to two acts of property destruction that occurred in 1999 and 2000 – damaging an office connected to GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) research, and destroying a piece of logging equipment.

Mason was  sentenced on February 5, 2009 in federal court to almost 22 years – the longest sentence of any Green Scare prisoner. An appeal for a reduction in her sentence was denied in 2010. For more information on Marie’s case, visit: http://supportmariemason.org

If, for whatever reason, you can’t make it to dinner, please take the time to write Marie a letter:
